Old fashioned Date and Nut Bread

8 oz. pitted dates

1 1/2 cups water

1 cups sugar

3 TBS butter

3 cups flour

2 TSP baking soda

1 egg

1/4-1/2 cup chopped walnuts as desired (can substitute any type nut preferred)



Heat oven to 350

chop dates, add to water, boil till soft, remove from heat, add sugar and butter.  Cool.

Sift flour with baking soda.

Add to date mixture.

Add egg, mix to incorporate.  Add nuts and mix.

Pour into 2 small or 1 large greased and floured loaf pans. 

Bake about 45 minutes. 

Remove from pans immediately and cool. 


These can also be baked in individual loaf pans, wrapped when cool, and given out for holiday presents.  We wrap them with colored plastic wrap and tie with ribbon for gifts. 


Serve with softened whipped cream cheese, either plain or mixed with honey.
